FAQ About Skype Online Music Lessons

Let me answer your questions about Skype online music lessons

Q: How exactly does it work?
A: Once a week, on the agreed-upon day and at the agreed-upon time, one of us will dial up the other on SKYPE and commence our musical studies on the specific topics of interest to you.

Q: What equipment do I need to do online music lessons with you?
A: You’ll need a computer – either a desktop or a laptop. You’ll need a camera and a microphone – or a camera with a built-in microphone. You’ll also need a SKYPE account. Get yours HERE This link opens a new browser window. (It takes less than a minute.)

Q: How much does it cost? Is it affordable?
A: Yes, it’s affordable. The fee for weekly, 30-minute online music lessons using SKYPE is 99 dollars per month. It’s a monthly, flat fee with no long term commitments.

Q: What if a month has five lesson days in it? Does it cost more that month?
A: No, actually. Any fifth lesson days in a month are done for FREE. The purpose of the free fifth lesson is to offset the occasional cancellation by you.

Q: What if I have to cancel a lesson?
A: Occasional cancellations by my students are to be expected which is why I offer any (non-holiday) fifth lesson days of the month for free. I also keep my rate very reasonable so any cancellations by you don’t hurt too much, financially.

Q: What if you cancel a lesson?
A: As I am highly committed and devoted to my music students – whether they be students I see in person or students I see online with SKYPE – I very rarely cancel. In the unusual and unlikely event that I do, it’s done at no cost to you. You’ll be credited forward.

Q: What if there are technical issues that ruin one of our sessions?
A: My SKYPE students are not held liable for payment for a significantly disrupted online music lesson due to an erratic or flawed performance by technology. That said, the reliability of SKYPE has much to do with how solid one’s internet connection is. Different parts of the world have varying degrees of web connectivity reliability.

Q: How will I do my homework during the week? What materials will I use?
A: I’ll recommend the appropriate book(s) for you, which are available online from a variety of sources. I have a wide of array of learning materials already prepared which can easily be emailed as well. I am also able to create additional materials designed specifically for your needs using music notation software.

Q: Can we jam and play music together on Skype?
A: No. As of now, SKYPE does not have 2-way audio. However, backing tracks can be acquired or created easily enough using a variety of media or software. I can advise and/or supply.

Q: How do I pay?
A: Payments can be made via Paypal – I’ll send an invoice – or via snail mail by sending me a personal check. (Remember, you don’t need a Paypal account to pay a bill with Paypal.) Personal checks are made payable either to The Music Teacher Guy LLC or to Matthew Torrence.
